Thanh Luong (L) dribbles past a defender of Bahrain in their Asian Games' group B match on November 8, 2010 in Guangzhou, China Photo: Tuoi TreVietnam will make history today in Guangzhou, China, if they beat Turkmenistan; they will enter the Asian Games football quarterfinals for the first time.
Earlier, on Monday, they routed Bahrain 3-1 in their first group B match while Turkmenistan lost 1-4 to group favorite Iran.
“Vietnam can win today but it will not be easy,” coach Phan Thanh Hung said. “Don’t look at their 1-4 loss and think Turkmenistan are weak.”
Turkmenistan are much better than Bahrain in attack, especially with their long passes along the wings, he added.
The Central Asian team have a massive physical edge: Their players are extremely fit and mostly above 1.8m, while the Vietnamese are only around 1.7m.
The 16th Asian Games has attracted 24 teams that are divided into six groups. The top two in each and four best third-placed teams, based on goal difference, will go through to the last 16.
The opening ceremony of the 15-day Games will be held Friday.
