First win for Liem at UK Chess Festival

Top Vietnamese chess player Le Quang Liem defeated Karim Ismael from Morocco to win the first game in the 2012 Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival taking place in the UK from January 24-February 2.

In this tournament, Liem, with an Elo rating of 2714, ranked among the top five chess players together with Peter Svidler from Russia (2749), Shakhriyar Mamedyarov from Azerbaijan (2747), Michael Adams from the UK (2747), and Zoltan Almasi from Hungary (2717).

This is the most impressive game for Liem so far. Two years ago, the Vietnamese chess talent secured his first major win over international chess grand master Shakhiriyar Mamedyarov in the India Open Chess Tournament.

All six top chess players defeated their rivals in the first game in the tournament. Liem will hold black pawn to play with his rival Salvador G with an Elo rating of 2531 in the second game.
