Sixteen-year-old Nguyen Hoang Thien of Vietnam goes through to the next round after beating the host tennis player Robber Allan Thursday in the Australian Open junior category which started January 24 in Melbourne.
Thien, who currently ranks 212th in the International Tennis Federation (ITF)'s junior rankings, defeat Australia’s tennis player Robber Allan (420th) 6-4, 6-0 in the first round of the men’s singles tennis.
He next takes on the winner of the competition between Australia’s Mitchell Burman and Japan’s Kazuma Kawachi, which is scheduled to take place today.
Thien has to win three matches at least so as to secure the right to compete in the official tournament.
Thien, who is the first Vietnamese to compete at one of the four grand slams, has set a target of entering the world’s top 200 young tennis players this year.
He is now coached by France's Tom Kindavong and Marcel Donminique.
Thien first stepped onto a tennis court at the age of eight.
