Weightlifter Nguyen Thi Hong finished with an 82.5kg lift in her third attempt to bag a bronze medal for Viet Nam at the Asian ParaGames for disabled athletes in Guangzhou, China yesterday, Dec 13.
Syria's Baddour Noura took silver with two successful lifts, 72.5kg and 82.5kg, edging out Hong, who failed in his first two attempts. Gold went to China's Fu Tiecan, who dominated with an 87.5kg lift.
The bronze puts Viet Nam in 12th place in the medal tally after the first competition day.
Viet Nam's 57-member squad of disabled athletes will be looking to win at least five golds at the games, which opened on Monday. The team will be competing in six out of 19 sports – track and field, swimming, table tennis, badminton, weightlifting and judo.
Four years ago, Viet Nam climbed to the top ten of medal-winning nations after bagging nine golds, 27 silvers and 31 bronze medals in Malaysia.
