A cold spell is forecast to strike the northern region on January 21-22, two days ahead of the traditional lunar New Year holiday, according to a leading weather expert.
The spell will spread across the northern, north-central and central regions and last through January 27, said Le Thanh Hai, deputy director of the National hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Centre.
It will bring drizzling rain and people living in the highlands and the lowlands will feel the damp chill, said Hai.
Currently, the northern region is being affected by cold weather, which caused temperatures to drop to 6oC in the mountain areas and 15oC in the plains.
Last week, a strong cold spell accompanied by rains hit the northern region and temperatures fell to zero degree in Mau Son Peak and Sapa tourist resort.
