Born in 1918, the prominent educator dedicated 73 years of his life to the pursuit of an educational career, giving lectures to hundreds of thousands of students since his very first days as a teacher at Bao An primary school in the central province of Quang Nam.

After that, he took up teaching at the high school level during the anti-France resistance war (1946-1954), composing textbooks (1955-1957) and lecturing to graduate and postgraduate students (1958-1973).

He was head of the Vietnamese Literature Department at the Hanoi University of Education for 15 years from 1963 to 1978, and after declining to serve as the school president, he moved south to teach at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Education.

After retirement, he continued to serve as dissertation advisers to many graduate students and became the school principal of Nguyen Khuyen -- a well-known private high school with more than 6,000 students.

Professor Vien sets a great example for self-studying efforts, which enabled him to become a prominent educator, lecturer, and researcher.

He translated, or co-translated, dozens of world classic literary works by Victor Hugo, Balzac, Dante, or Lu Xun.

He also published a total of 46 research work and books in the field of literature, as well as dozens of short stories and poems.
