The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee is seeking more money from the government for the city’s first metro project between Ben Thanh and Suoi Tien after costs have more than doubled.
They have gone up from the original US$1.1 billion to around $2.5 billion, with the committee blaming it on the rising prices of construction materials and higher salaries for workers.
If the new cost estimate is approved, $2.2 billion will have to come from ODA loans.
Work on the metro began in 2008 and is scheduled for completion in 2015.
It is designed to carry 526,000 passengers daily
