Almost 1,000 tonnes of pesticide contaminated mud that was lying buried in a basement on Road 20 in Hiep Binh Chanh Ward in Thu Duc District in Ho Chi Minh City has been declared toxic, according to a Department of Natural Resources and Environment report.

Analysis results from samples taken from the mud pile, by the Institute of Natural Resources and Environment under the City National University, showed that the mud contained various toxic substances that were higher than permissible levels, one being Gamma-DHC, which was found to be 7.5 times more than permissible limits.

The basement is in the Binh Trieu antiseptic plant compound, which had been handed over for construction of the Tan Son Nhat-Binh Loi-outer belt road.

Authorised organizations have offered to treat the mud waste and remove toxic elements.
