Phu Tho province north of Hanoi and Dong Thap province south of HCM City will start using a new kind of vaccine against whooping-cough, diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis B and meningitis caused by virus Hib in their expanded vaccination programme this May.
Dr. Nguyen Tran Hien, chairman of the National Expanded Vaccination Program, said that after proving its worth in the two above provinces, the vaccine will be used nation-wide.
This will be the first time the vaccine against meningitis caused by virus Hib has been included in the programme. This is the 11th vaccine type used in the National Expanded Vaccination Programme. All of them are provided free of charge.
Meanwhile, HCM City is reportedly now short of some vaccines, especially typhoid and meningitis vaccines. The HCM City Pasteur Institute is currently out of the vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella. The institute's doctor Cao Huu Nghia said that the shortage is general throughout Southeast Asia.
