Two Indonesian thieves who stole over 2 billion dong ($105,000) from a car which parked in Lang Street, Hanoi, this April were arrested on October 31.
Hanoi police on October 31 arrested two Indonesian citizens, Teddy Wijaya, 35, and Aldy Prayoga, 38, for theft in Vietnam.
On April 12, a Hanoi couple withdrew over 2 billion dong from a Techcombank branch in Hanoi. On the way home, their car tire was punctured, and the couple had to stop on Lang road to change the tire.
While they were busy fixing the tire, thieves pried the car door open to steal over 2 billion dong. Police found out that the puncture was caused by a spike-board.
According to police, this case is similar to two other cases in 2008 in Hanoi and in HCM City in 2009, in which the culprits were Indonesian.
Police discovered a group of Indonesians who had entered Vietnam many times, without clear purposes. These people returned home after a short period of time and then entered Vietnam again. Among them are Teddy Wijaya And Aldy Prayoga.
Just one day after the theft on Lang Road, these men exchanged a large amount of Vietnamese dong into US dollars and returned home. In late October 2010, they came to Vietnam again.
On October 27-29, they rented a motorbike and loitered around banks on Lang Ha, Truong Chinh and Le Van Luong streets. On October 30, they suddenly left the hotel to the Noi Bai International Airport to return home. Police seized them at the airport.
They confessed that they stole over 2 billion dong on April 12. They said they returned home because after three days spying at banks, there had been no opportunities to steal money.
Hanoi police are investigating the case.
