The 2008 Bugatti Veyron, which priced around $800,000 and $1.7 million for used and brand new ones in the US, is imported to Vietnam by an overseas Vietnamese who has chosen to return to Vietnam for the rest of his life.
The owner of the supercar, mainly colored in while and red, will be exempt from import tax, but he still has to pay $608,000 special consumption and value-added taxes.
A car expert told Tuoi Tre that the vehicle will cost around $20,000 a year for maintenance in the US, and the work can only be done by its own maintenance team.
Other maintenance musts include an overall tire change worth around $33,000 per 4,000-kilometer run, and new rims worth about $55,000 per 16,000-kilometer run, he said.
The Bugatti Veyron, a mid-engined grand touring car with a top speed of 408 km/h, can accelerate from 0km/h to 100 km/h within 2.2 seconds.
It features an 8.0 liter, quad-turbocharged, W16 cylinder engine, equivalent to two narrow-angle V8 engines. Each cylinder has four valves for a total of sixty four, but the narrow staggered V8 configuration allows two overhead camshafts to drive two banks of cylinders so only four camshafts are needed.
The engine is fed by four turbochargers and displaces 7,993 cubic centimeters, with a square 86 by 86 mm bore and stroke.
At full acceleration, Veyron consumes 1 liter of gasoline per 1 km, higher than a Williams team’s F1 racing car.
Officials of Volkswagen, the parent company of Bugatti, said the Veyron is "born to be uneconomical." This car is just a technology trial that Volkswagen planned to apply on other cars, Audi or Lamborghini.
As planned, only 300 units of Volkwsagen Bugatti Veyron have been manufactured since it started to be on sales since 2005. The plant in France turns out only about 45 units per year.
With a standard ground clearance of 125 mm which can be lowered to 66 mm, Bugatti Veyron is not easy to be driven in Vietnam, according to the video clip showing the preparation for the car to hit the road has been spread via many automobile websites of in Vietnam.
Generally, ground clearance for sedans is about 155 mm.
